HMRC Urges Parents to Claim Child Benefit for Christmas

hmrc urges parents to claim child benefit for christmas

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is encouraging parents to claim Child Benefit so they won’t miss out on getting their payments in time for Christmas. The holiday season is just over the horizon. New parents should especially claim as, depending on whether they claim online or via the HMRC app, their first payment will arrive in just three working days.

Child Benefit is £1,331 per year for the first child and £881 per year for each subsequent child. Parents can quickly and easily claim these payments online or through an app. The online service has been very successful, with 87% of fresh claims made online or through the app every month.

HMRC’s Director General for Customer Services, Myrtle Lloyd, urged parents to claim Child Benefit early, particularly during the costly and hectic period of having a child. She also urged parents to download the free HMRC app, which makes it easier to manage claims and receive payments as quickly as possible.

Families will need parents to register with HMRC online and claim first point as a basis.

  • Certificate of birth or adoption for the child
  • Bank information
  • National Insurance number for their partner and themselves
  • if children born overseas have a passport or travel document and original birth or adoption certificate.

To claim, parents will require their child’s birth or adoption certificate, bank information, and National Insurance details for themselves and their partner, if they have one. Claims can be claimed back for up to 12 weeks, so it is worth applying as soon as possible.

With Christmas looming, HMRC’s message is simple: claim your Child Benefit now so that your family can get the financial help they need this holiday season.
